However, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was asked to surrender Phoolan Devi in 1983, which Phoolan accepted. Phoolan's next condition was that all the people of his gang should not be sentenced to more than 8 years. These conditions were accepted by the government. But Phoolan Devi had to stay in jail for 11 years without trial.

Phoolan was released from jail by the Samajwadi government in 1994 and only two years later Phoolan got an offer to contest from the Samajwadi Party and won the Mirzapur seat and became an MP and reached Delhi. After this, 2001 was the last year of Phoolan's life. Sher Singh Rana, who described himself as a warrior who fought for Rajput pride this year, killed Phoolan Devi at his residence in Delhi.
